CASTLEMAINE HOME: “THE GABLES”
RICH IN HISTORY AND CRAFTMANSHIP

American magazines arriving in Australia in 1914 featured the exciting new architectural style called “Californian Bungalow”. These attractive houses appealed to Australian tastes with their use of high-pitched red terra-cotta roofs, wide eaves, deep verandahs which then opened onto a spacious hall plus rooms with high ceilings.

Muriel Millicent Stott, a young architect from Melbourne met this design challenge by planning Castlemaine’s finest example of “Californian Bungalow” which was then built in Greenhill Avenue in 1917.

Upon entry through the front door the visual impact of the dramatic hallway with it’s wooden spiral staircase can be appreciated, to the right a billiard room is a plus for family living. To the left a generous sized study with polished board flooring overlooks the north facing verandah.
A lounge / sitting room has an open fireplace which provides warmth and ambience. A large well-proportioned dining room is off the stylish kitchen, which has every quality convenience. A stainless steel fridge, dishwasher and oven are set in light colour fitted wooden cupboards and drawers, which provide ample storage. Adjoining the kitchen is a family area that ensures relaxation and comfort. Also downstairs is a spa bathroom and a separate toilet, both featuring black and white glossy flooring tiles throughout.

The home has the potential to provide 5 bedrooms, 3 of which are upstairs. These are atmospheric attic-style rooms with in-built robes and mellow wall panellings and the attractive master bedroom has an en-suite. Extensive cupboard space throughout the home is a bonus and the interior is fully air-conditioned and heated.

There are 4 open fireplaces in the home with fire surrounds and mantles made from red pine together with all windows, doors, skirtings and the original storage cupboards running the length of the hall passage and several other cupboards retaining the original features of the home.

Outside many delights wait to be discovered with several outbuildings, which include a studio room and a former outside W.C., which makes a perfect gardener’s “loo”.

Set on a ½ acre block, which is serviced by bore water; the old-world garden has many “Edna Walling” influences in its presentation and layout.

This exceptional property in a sought-after central location is “tucked away”
