“Needlesdale” is a well established farming operation which has been planted out with three varieties of Oak trees for Truffle production. Forest trees cover 50 hectares of the total 80 hectares, on one title. Approximately 20,000 trees have been planted over two generations (16 and 10 years ago). The terrain is attractive, gently rolling country which enjoys stunning views of the Great Western Tiers in the Deloraine district of Northern Tasmania. The presentation and management of trees is the major asset of this enterprise. As one of the older Truffiere’s in the country, the value of these aged’ trees cannot be underestimated. The expected yield for the coming season could range between 420 and 600 kilograms.
The location of the property is 14 kilometres west of Deloraine along Needles Road. The farm title commences one kilometre along Trickett Road, offering security and the added bonus of being out of sight from general passing traffic. Internal gravel roads have been established on the farm and are maintained to a high standard.
The major soil types include heavy, deep red basalt and grey to black self-mulching clays.
Irrigation water is sourced from surface run-off from local paddock catchment. A new pump house is situated on one of two storage dams. The capacity of the two irrigation dams is 100 mega litres. A Grunvos Netafin pump supports an elevated mini sprinkler system which covers the entire grove.
The capital infrastructure is all useful and purpose built. These include an office and preparation room, machinery shed, lockup workshop, working dog kennels, exercise yards and a three bedroom managers cottage.
