History
The Sheiling was originally two conjoined dwellings and it is thought that two policemen were housed here to keep an eye on travelers approaching from their direction. This would explain why weather proof porches were constructed at each end with a small window in each one facing north and one facing south.

In 1877 the Sheiling was purchased by John James Butler and remained in the Butler family for 76 years. In 1953, it was purchased by Miss Brownell, a Butler family friend.

The Sheilings driveway is the original road from Hobart to the north of the state before the Derwent River was crossed by the Bridgewater and Pontville bridges and the Midland Highway constructed.
