Tasmania is renowned for its unspoiled wilderness areas, world class cruising waters and a clean, green reputation for agricultural products. Tasmania’s disease free status and our moderate weather patterns offer a unique niche and an opportunity to supply the world’s markets with fresh, quality products, at off season times, at premium prices. Lennonville orchards have capitalised on this opportunity and have developed very strong Australian and international markets, particularly in the USA and Europe.
Lennonville Orchards has registered the Black Devil Tasmanian Cherries brand and has rapidly developed a huge demand for its superb fruit. The orchards are uniquely positioned in a frost free, maritime environment on Bruny Island. Bruny Island is just 45 minutes commuting from Hobart, Tasmania’s capital city. Currently there are 15,000 trees with 12,000 plus trees under permanent net and more areas available for planting. The two year old packing shed with GP grader, York Thermfresh hydro and high humidity pressure cooling and 40 tons of refrigeration is all state of the art equipment. There is a secure and rechargeable water supply with large on farm dams fed via a reliable rainfall. Averaging $13.57 per kilo the production volumes are rapidly increasing as new trees come on line. This last season 54 tonnes of 1st grade export and 5.7 tonnes of 2nd grade were packed and sold.
In excess of 70% of 1st grade fruit was in excess of 28mm in size. Conservative projections of future production are exciting. As more trees come into full production 2010 will see in the order of 130 tonnes of first grade fruit and by 2013 production should be around 180 tonnes.
There is an excellent management team in place and experienced orchard workers are never an issue. A new owner can enjoy a wonderful lifestyle, a significant income and not have to be too hands on with physical workload.
