The Story

You could be forgiven for not knowing of this charming cottage’s existence. It sits privately behind a tall protective hedge on the corner of Alston Road – a beautiful country lane bordered by 100 year old English Oak trees on the edge of Littlehampton and Blakiston. The acres of adjacent paddocks and the view of the charming old stone church helped the owners to fall in love when they accidently stumbled across the property a few years ago. As you enter through the front gate, you can’t help but smile – and you haven’t even got to the front door yet!

An eclectic mix of vintage treasures, combine to create an interior that begs to be featured in a magazine. Recycled windows, Turkish floor tiles (that have made their way to the ceiling in the music room) a Japanese style vanity with a Chinese decorated porcelain wash basin to mention just a few of the salvaged features have been expertly incorporated into the renovation.

The floor plan has been adapted to suit the needs of the current custodians. They have integrated a dressing room, and an ensuite bathroom into the master bedroom with french doors leading to the sun drenched, north facing verandah overlooking the pretty, private front garden. A “snug”or reading nook has been cleverly included in the kitchen next to the fireplace. The slow combustion fire keeps the winter chills at bay efficiently and economically during the cooler months while you practice your Masterchef skills in the modern, ergonomic kitchen. I just love the pantry with its floor to ceiling dresser (included in the sale) and its fabulous storage options.
The dining zone allows you to feel as if you are in the garden with its full length windows and rustic tiled floor. The living room makes you feel you just need to sit down and absorb the ambience – this really is a very special place with its added feature sunroom when you need a quiet corner to contemplate your good fortune! Alterations have been made to the plan to include a zone for Mrs P’s baby grand piano. The owners have always thought it would also make a cosy study. I wonder whether it would make a good place for a set of stairs to lead to a loft conversion (STCC naturally) Give some thought as to how this area could work or be transformed to suit your specific needs.

The bathrooms are simply gorgeous. The main boasts a freestanding claw foot bath that allows you to lie back, relax and keep asking yourself “Is this my best spot on Earth?” I’m thinking the answer will probably be yes!

The garden is an extension of the cottage with its meandering brick paths and masses of shrubs and herbs. It features a central pergola with “Williams Folly” being the conversion of the outside lavatory (disused) into the garden shed with a small loft conversion for the odd bird or two (a pigeon loft). Miss Williams Road is the affectionate name given to the shed. Once again, your choice as to the use you apply to this building but it would make a fabulous workshop and or studio or perhaps a games room – let me know!

As you can probably tell – I am really rather thrilled to have been given the opportunity to find Alston Cottage some new occupants. Its stolen my heart….I hope it does the same to yours!
