Redland Bay was the fruit and vegetable bowl for the fledgling colony of Brisbane. The first settlers arrived in chains in 1836 when convicts were shipped into the area behind the bay islands to tend the gardens and stock which fed the colonisers.
Although major development has occurred since the first road link with Brisbane was forged in 1924, the area is still liberally sprinkled with small farms, orchards, commercial flower gardens and market places.
One of the few surviving plantation homesteads from the golden years of the sugar cane industry on Wellington Point, Whepstead House, now operates as a restaurant.
From Victoria Point it is just a 10-minute ferry ride across a narrow strait to one of the most natural and quietest of Brisbanes island pearls, Coochiemudlo, which has a full range of facilities, picnic amenities and calm beaches for day-trippers. There is an annual ceremony in June re-enacting Matthew Flinders landing on the island.
