Redstone was designed and built by Walter Burley Griffin, architect, landscape architect and town planner. Completed in 1935 it is the last house designed by Griffin to be built in Australia. Sited on a 1423 sq m level block in its original build. Restorative works were undertaken in 2008 under the supervision of Ian Stapleton, heritage architect.
Built from locally quarried sandstone, it features;

* Open plan living, an innovative idea for the period
* Four bedrooms, each with its own wash basin
* Separate spacious lounge and dining room
* Study/Utility room
* Open fire place with sandstone surrounds
* Full brick and Sandstone construction with polished timber floors
* Separate garage and workshop

Redstone has been widely recognized as a house of historic and cultural significance. It was listed on the State Heritage Register in January 2009 adding to listings on the Register of National Estate, National Trust of Australia, and it is on the RAIA Register of 20th Century Buildings of Significance.

Original Griffin plans, specifications and early photographs, including those of the building in progress, still exist.

As the centenary of Walter Burley Griffin’s winning design for Canberra draws near, there is renewed interest in his life and work, town and community planning and architecture, including his domestic designs. Of all the Griffin houses, Redstone is unique.

After almost three quarters of a century, "Redstone" is ready for a new direction. An adjacent vacant 663sqm block with a separate title is also available. There is ample potential for sympathetic upgrade and further development as an elegant residence or for other uses such as professional suites or reception centre with appropriate approvals.
