PENSHURST: Penshurst is an historic rural service centre situated at the foot of Mt Rouse in South West Victoria. It has a population of around 500 people and offers basic retail, education and health services including 2 primary schools (State & Catholic), aged care facility, hotel, post office, police station and general retail shops. It has a range of sporting facilities including football, netball, cricket and tennis clubs with the Racing Club continuously celebrating its Cup meeting on Boxing day since 1866.

HISTORY: Madigans is a Penshurst landmark, formerly a general store for over 120 years and in more recent years, Tea Rooms and an Antique Shop and today a gracious family home.

The land was first purchased as a corner allotment in 1852 by the James Blair of Portland from the Victorian Government. In 1865 the well known Warrnambool department store of Crammond and Dickson purchased the land and opened a store on site. John Ritchie (presumably of Blackwood, Penshurst and David Ritchie), purchased the business and freehold in the late 1880s and involved various partners. Ellen Madigan (wife of Tim Madigan) purchased the business and freehold in 1904 and ran it as a General Store known as Madigans until the mid 1980s. The stock & station agency of OBriens rented an office from 1907, and also on site is the former Malcolms Produce Store known more recently as Cooks, which is the last remaining of a row of shops strategically located between two significant Bluestone buildings; Madigans Store & the old Shire Office.

Madigans was purchased by the current owners in 1986 and has been faithfully restored to its former glory to its current status. A well known Antique business and Tea Rooms was carried on by the current owners from 1987 until 2011. It is now a gracious family home.
