According to the Australian Heritage Places Inventory The Sunray Flats demonstrate the principle characteristics of an architectural style which originated in Europe during the 1920s and 1930s, loosely termed Modernism. The building typifies this style in both its planning and aesthetic characteristics. These design features include a combination of white curved and straight walls, a “liberated” open-plan interior, a cubic exterior, a flat roof concealed behind a parapet, and horizontal metal framed windows. The additional materials of terrazzo, metal fencing, and boxed lighting fixtures, are further stylistic representations of the Modern period in this building. The Sunray Flats exemplifies a purity of form which is rare in Tasmania, given the geographic isolation of the state, and the somewhat conservative approach to design.
The Sunray Flats were designed by the firm Colin Wilson of Hartley Wilson and Philp and constructed in 1938. The form and appearance of the building is of the Early Modern style, and comprises eight self-contained flats. Construction is concrete blockwork, rendered smooth and painted cream. The form of the structure is cuboid with central entrances and curved corners. The central face of the front facade has four rectangular-shaped, metal framed windows. Long narrow windows which wrap around the curves at both ends and on both levels. The metal framed windows are painted black. External stairs give access to the first floor and roof. These are precast with black-painted tubular steel rails.
