Charles Nelson Perkins (16 June 1936 – 19 October 2000), popularly known as Charlie Perkins, was an Australian activist, soccer player, and public administrator. He is often recognized as the first known indigenous Australian man to graduate from a tertiary institution. Perkins was a prominent figure in the 1965 Freedom Ride, which highlighted racial discrimination in rural Australia, and played a significant role in campaigning for a “yes” vote in the 1967 referendum on Aboriginal rights.
